You’ve locked in the location, scheduled the date, and booked a photographer whose work makes you feel something deeply. Now comes the part that surprises most couples: deciding what to wear. As a CT engagement photographer, I’ve helped dozens of couples prepare for their engagement session—and the biggest question I get, by far, is about styling.
Engagement photos capture a short but sacred season. They’re not just prep for the wedding—they’re often the first time you’re professionally photographed together, the first peek your loved ones see on save-the-dates, and sometimes the first time you get to slow down and be present with one another in the midst of all the planning. That’s why what you wear matters—not because it needs to be perfect, but because it should reflect your story, your style, and the season you’re in.
Below, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know: how to dress for the camera, what colors and fabrics work best, how to coordinate with your partner, and which accessories, makeup, and styling touches elevate your final gallery.
Before picking out outfits, take a step back and ask yourselves: How do we want these photos to feel?
Elegant and romantic? Relaxed and playful? Chic and editorial? The answer to that question can guide your entire approach. As your CT engagement photographer, I’ll always steer you toward authenticity—toward the version of you that feels the most confident, connected, and at ease in front of the camera.
Once you’ve decided on a vibe or mood, choose clothing that supports it. That might mean a flowing maxi dress and linen button-down for a golden hour beach session, or a structured midi dress and heels for a city rooftop shoot. The setting will influence the style, but your personality should lead the way.
Over the years, I’ve found a few key patterns in what works best on camera:
A great CT engagement photographer will pay close attention to how your clothing interacts with your environment. For instance, if we’re shooting in a field with golden tones, a rust or sage outfit adds richness. If we’re at the coast, soft blues and creams evoke a classic nautical feel without being too on-the-nose.
The goal isn’t to match—it’s to complement. You want to look like you belong in the same scene, not like you’re wearing uniforms. The easiest way to do this? Choose a palette of two to three tones and build both outfits from there.
Let’s say one of you wears a pale blue dress. The other could pair a white linen shirt with camel trousers, or even a navy suit jacket with relaxed chinos. Soft neutrals and muted jewel tones blend beautifully together—and allow you to bring in seasonal nods without going overboard.
Your CT engagement photographer can help review outfit options before the session to ensure nothing clashes with your location or with one another. We want the images to feel harmonious, balanced, and timeless—just like your connection.
If you’re ever unsure, we always encourage trying on outfits in natural light and snapping a few iPhone photos together. It’ll quickly show you how tones and shapes feel when combined.
Most of our couples bring two outfits—one that’s slightly more formal, and one that’s more relaxed. This not only adds visual variety to your gallery, but also allows you to showcase the different dynamics of your relationship.
One outfit might be polished and romantic—like a flowy dress or smart blazer—while the other could feel cozier and candid, like a sweater and boots or jeans with a clean button-up.
As your CT engagement photographer, I’ll structure the session around your outfit change, making sure each look gets a distinct setting and feeling. Just be sure that both outfits work together stylistically—if one is black-tie and the other is jeans and sneakers, the visual gap might be too wide. Instead, think of them as two expressions of the same story.
Accessories shouldn’t steal the show—but they can enhance it. Think of them as the punctuation marks to your outfit: simple, intentional, and in service of the full sentence.
Here are a few ideas we’ve seen elevate a session:
For hair and makeup, we always suggest going one level up from your everyday style. This doesn’t mean you need a full glam team—but a little polish helps you feel put together and camera-ready. Many of our clients use this as an opportunity to book their wedding makeup trial, which is a great way to test the look and photograph it under real conditions.
And don’t forget about hands—your ring will make plenty of appearances! A quick manicure or clean nails (for everyone) go a long way.
While engagement sessions are meant to feel relaxed and fun, there are a few common outfit missteps we like to help our couples avoid:
Instead, opt for pieces that move well, fit you confidently, and feel just elevated enough to reflect the importance of the moment.
At the end of the day, the most beautiful engagement photos aren’t about what you’re wearing. They’re about the way you look at each other, the way you laugh, the way your hands find one another instinctively in every frame.
What you wear should support that—not steal from it. That’s why we always encourage couples to choose outfits that align with their story, enhance their confidence, and complement the session environment.
As your CT engagement photographer, my job isn’t to make you look like someone else—it’s to create a space where you feel relaxed, seen, and genuinely excited to be documented. And yes, with the right outfits, lighting, and connection… we’ll make magic.
